Involvement in CONTRAST

The Niger group will be responsible for the collection of parasitological and malacological data in Niger especially for analysis in the WP3-8, 10 and 11.

Key Personnel

Dr Amadou Garba is the National Co-ordinator of the programme for Schistosomiasis and Soil-transmitted helminths of Niger. He studied medicine at the University of Niamey (Niger), then public health and epidemiology at the Regional Public Health Institute at Cotonou (Benin) and the University of Bordeaux 2 (France). Earlier in his career he was a researcher at CERMES in Niamey, a centre which collaborates with the World Health Organisation on research into schistosomiasis and its prevention and cure. In 1993 he trained in ultrasound techniques, and he has carried out more than 15,000 ultrasound scans to evaluate morbidity due to schistosomiasis in various regions of Niger, Benin and Burkina Faso where the disease is endemic.
