HCP - Experience and qualifications
The Helminth Control Programme (HCP) is part of the Department of Preventive Services of the Ministry of Health. The mandate of the Department is the prevention of communicable diseases and provision of health education. HCP is responsible for control and research of helminthic diseases especially schistosomiasis. The laboratory has contributed for many years to studies involving diagnosis, chemotherapy, treatment and transmission. In 2003 the new Schistosomiasis Control Programme (Kick out Kichocho) was launched by the President of Zanzibar. The Programme is a partnership between the Natural History Museum, the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative and the Ministry of Health aimed at improving the health of children. The HCP has recently refurbished and extended their facility, this now includes good laboratory space and a snail room.
Involvement in CONTRAST
The very experienced group in Zanzibar will be responsible for parasitological and malacological data collection on Zanzibar and participating in biological control assay in WP21.
Key Personnel
Dr Khalfan Mohammed is the program manager for the HCP. Before this new post he was responsible for the Lymphatic Filariasis Program. He graduated as a biologist from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in 1981 and completed he Masters degree in Public Health in 1987 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, United States of America.
